Adding “Just The Right Touch” To Your Home

By Melanie Saxton

A room filled with furniture is one thing, but a living space artfully decorated with accents is quite another! Interior environments need a blend of textures, hues and contrast pieces to create an extra layer of beauty in living areas and bedrooms. Whether sophisticated and elegant or festive and fun, accents can add “just the right touch” to your home. Here we share concepts from some of our favorite brands.

Urbane and Sophisticated

Not pretentious, but rather “refined,” is one way to describe the luxurious sensibility of the Barbara Barry collection by Baker Furniture. “To work closely with the company’s skilled artisans and create with more luxurious materials than before is incredibly rewarding,” she says of her elegant home furnishings. The Baker Historic Charleston collection is also noteworthy for its rich wood tones and luxurious craftsmanship.

Other brands also elevate the interior of homes. Thibaut’s sophisticated Wyndham Ottoman in Cabo Cotton is another beautiful accent piece. Lexington’s Tower Place collection offers the Aston Round lamp table – a modern statement piece with brushed rose gold hardware.

Rustic and Reclaimed

Eco-friendly and authentic, reclaimed wood has been trending for some time in both traditional and contemporary spaces. This year is no exception as homeowners continue to bring nature indoors. Unlike other woods, the reclaimed and recycled variety has a backstory. It may have once been a hand hewn beam, a barn door, a railroad tie, or even a barrel from an old winery.

Remilling and refinishing resurrects these items into conversation pieces. One example includes Dovetail Furniture’s Westminster dining table with a reclaimed elm base and smoked wood finish.

Americana

Americana is on the rise – generally a collection of red, white and blue fabrics and artifacts that symbolize our unique and historic traditions. Hancock & Moore’s “Iconic Americana” collection is an excellent example that debuted at High Point Market. But certainly other colors combine well with this décor, and interior designers can skillfully introduce surprising applications. For instance, Americana can bridge pop culture, Native American design, Texas pride, Western nostalgia, and primitive.

Hooker’s Melange Fifi vanity chair in document fossil fabric fits this eclectic panorama. And in a twist on Americana, fans of British décor may enjoy the Mélange Union Jack 3-drawer chest with a painted flag front!

Pops of Color

From lamps to upholstered benches to ottomans, vivid colors are popular in room settings. They add excitement to a side table, fireplace mantel or wall, while juxtaposing against the wood tones of furniture. Wildwood offers a variety of lamps that can illuminate a living space with light as well as brilliant hues.

At times, furniture itself may be a colorful room element. Jessica Charles’ new “Pretty in Pink” collection creates a lovely pop of color, while Klaussner Furniture’s Craven Collection offers upholstery in an assortment of colorful stripes.

Leather Accents

Leather may be forever… but isn’t just for sofas anymore. Since it can be dyed, leather is a potential addition to almost any room and may appear on accent tabletops, lamp stands, and as decorative trim on lampshades. We find it on picture and mirror frames, such as Bernhardt’s Eaton Square leather-wrapped mirror – a handsome wall accent piece. Leather Italia also has a fine offering of leather chairs and recliners in interesting hues.

Other Inspirations

Showroom floors are filled with inspiring and surprising home furnishings. This certainly benefits homeowners who seek accent pieces that are far from ordinary. When a piece of furniture is uniquely designed, it can become a conversation piece and focal point.

In the case of Paula Deen’s River House writing table, the sawhorse design and two metal storage bins will surely evoke comments. Another interesting piece is the Curl Tide flip-top table in Stanley Furniture’s Coastal Living Resort collection. This piece has a well-worn, laid-back look in sandy linen beige finish with heavy distressing – a true stand-out piece.

Suiting Your Own Style

Many brands offer fabulous accent items, and homeowners are fortunate to be able to pick and choose. But identifying precisely what is needed in each room may require help. Interior designers, for instance, can elevate the decorating experience with their expert eye and attention to detail. They are also masters at scale, color combinations, and room layout.

So don’t hesitate to call on an expert if you feel overwhelmed or have questions. And certainly, the sales staff on showroom floors can also be of great assistance. The goal is to define your personal aesthetic while incorporating delightful design into your home.
