Sun-drenched days and fun-filled nights define San Diego’s The Grand Del Mar
By Bill Anderson
When planning a getaway, much of America ranks a region’s climate as tops on where they like to spend their time and money, and according to two of the top resources —the Farmer’s Almanac and The Weather Channel — San Diego is hard to beat. And if, like me, you want to stay in a resort whose amenities are as grand and glorious as the weather of the region, you’d be hard pressed to find a destination finer than The Grand Del Mar.
The Grand Del Mar
Serenely nestled in Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, The Grand Del Mar seamlessly combines the old-world charm of a Mediterranean estate with the modern luxury of an elegant resort. Situated amidst the striking fairways of The Grand Golf Club, this beautiful destination is San Diego County’s only Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond luxury resort destination, and in 2012 it became California’s first Triple Five-Star resort receiving Forbes Travel Guide’s highest rating for its hotel, spa and restaurant. As one of only six destinations in the world to hold this high honor, The Grand Del Mar ascended to California’s No. 1 resort (No. 4 in the U.S.) in Travel & Leisure’s 2013 World’s Best Awards.
Inspired by the rich decorative arts of Spain, Portugal, Italy and Morocco, architect Addison Mizner’s exotic style is evoked throughout The Grand Del Mar, with its colorful palette, graceful arches, rotundas, vibrant tile, wood-beamed ceilings, ornate stone and wrought iron accents, decorative columns, parquet flooring and gracious veranda. The buildings, decor and landscape are integrated seamlessly; indoors meets outdoors; outside flows inside; and the result is a hallmark of The Grand Del Mar.
We found the accommodations are no less impressive, no matter if you are in a guestroom or guest suite — where marble baths, luxurious linens and large, comfy beds are among the unprecedented array of gracious appointments and complimentary resort amenities—or one of the Brisa Villas — where unparalleled beauty and craftsmanship define every detail of the majestic 4,500-square-foot Brisa Villas. With luxurious space and thoughtful design, these palatial residences combine the privacy of a home with the conveniences and amenities of a world-class hotel.;
We feasted in The Grand Del Mar’s signature restaurant, Addison, Southern California’s only Five-Star/Five Diamond Restaurant, which features Relais & Chateaux Grand Chef William Bradley’s artisanal approach to cooking. Bradley combines local ingredients with contemporary French influences, and his seasonal menu offered us several inspired meals of culinary expertise paired with Grand Award-winning wines (a list of nearly 3,600 selections). We found the world-class tasting environment, complete with just the right glassware, perfect storage of wines and knowledgeable service to be extraordinary.
From the 50,000-square-foot Clubhouse perched just beyond the 18th hole’s cascading waterfall finish to traditional fore caddies services and nearly seven full acres of practice areas, The Grand Golf Club’s amenities provide the ultimate golf experience at San Diego’s only Tom Fazio-designed premier golf course.
One of the region’s most dramatic and challenging 18-hole courses, the 7,160-yard, par-72 Grand Golf Club spans 380 spectacular acres. The Grand Golf Performance Academy offers a complete team of teaching professionals and also features instructions for junior golfers.
My better half enjoyed her time at The Spa at The Grand Del Mar where sparkling crystal tiles, warm wood accents and imported white Carrera marble heightened the Renaissance aesthetic and elegance of what she described as a lavish retreat.
Separate male and female lounge areas feature European-style wet rooms; indoor whirlpools; plush robes and slippers; complimentary water, hot tea and other organic refreshments; and all treatments at The Spa utilize The Grand Del Mar Skin and Body Care Collection, a private label of botanical- and aroma therapy-based face and body wellness products.
We explored a bit beyond the resort where we discovered some of the local charm, and great shops at Del Mar Fashion Valley, boutiques in La Jolla and downtown Horton Plaza. At the world-famous San Diego Zoo, we enjoyed up close and personal access to some of our most beloved animal ambassadors and their trainers through the “Inside Look Tour.”
I enjoyed every moment of my time on this getaway. From the sun-drenched days of poolside lounging and golf to the fun-filled nights of fine wining and dining, for me, The Grand Del Mar and the San Diego area ranked No. 1 on places I visited.
