Thanks to mutual friends, Meghan Elizabeth Hammonds and Scot Everett Gibson met for the first time at Meghan’s 10th year high school reunion. Lightning struck, and they became inseparable. A year and a half later, the happy couple exchanged vows at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston, followed by a beautiful reception at the River Oaks Country Club.

Meghan graduated from Cy-Falls High School and Texas Christian University as a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in radio, TV, and film. She later graduated from St. Thomas University with a Master of Liberal Arts degree and is a property tax consultant at Tax Recourse in Houston.

Scot, an Eagle Scout, attended J. Frank Dobie High School in Houston and graduated from Texas State University as member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance and later earned a Master of Business Administration degree in finance at University of Houston. He is a commercial lender in Houston.

First Date and Courtship

After being introduced at Meghan’s high school reunion, they caught up with each other few months later and went on their first date at El Big Bad Mexican Restaurant—and hit it off! A short courtship followed, and the couple announced their engagement five months later.

The Proposal

Scot, Meghan and her family vacationed in Puerto Rico right after Christmas 2014, and Scot arranged a private dinner on the beach with flowers and music. Meghan had no idea that halfway through dinner he would drop to one knee and ask her to marry him! After dinner her family members, who were in on the secret, were waiting with cake and champagne. Everyone celebrated the milestone moment. “It was a fairy tale proposal,” says Meghan.

Engagement

Throughout their 10-month engagement, Meghan and Scot attended many concerts in and around Houston and enjoyed the live music scene. Of course, their major focus was on wedding planning, which was especially fun for Meghan. She envisioned an elegant, traditional ceremony and a glamorous reception with a modern flair. “Scot helped when I needed him and even designed his own groom’s cake,” she says.

The Wedding

The wedding weekend began with festivities hosted by the couple’s parents, Nancy and Ron Hammonds of Houston and Douglas and Sherri Gibson of Wimberley, including a bridal luncheon at Brennan’s Restaurant, a golf tournament at Hearthstone Country Club and a rehearsal dinner at Lupe Tortilla. The following day, October 10, 2015, Meghan and Scot were united in marriage during an exquisite ceremony featuring music by organist Rob Landes, the Richard Brown String Quartet, and vocalists Ellen Olive and Trey Willis.

Attire: The bride wore a stunning V-neck couture gown of ivory silk shantung by Isabelle Armstrong of New York, featuring dramatic crystal back detailing, a fitted bodice, and a fitted trumpet skirt falling into a circular chapel train. The ensemble was completed by an illusion cathedral veil designed by Toni Federici of light ivory and delicate crystal accents. The bride carried a bible given to her at her baptism in 1986 by her aunt Cindy Holster, and also wore her maternal grandmother’s wedding band and her great-grandmother’s wedding ring. Bridesmaids wore designer gowns, individually selected in various shades and lengths for a modern aesthetic.

The groom’s attire included a black tuxedo, vest and black bow tie. Groomsmen wore black tuxedos with black bowties.

Bridal Party: Dr. Thomas J. Pace III officiated the ceremony. Kelly Thomas, sister of the bride, served as matron of honor. Bridesmaids included Alicia Reis, Sasha Armstrong, Carly Walker, Jennifer Hammonds, Kimberly Hammonds, Jenna Kline, Lauren Hussey, Leah Hamilton, Monica Kellum, and Megan Gibson. Nieces of the bride Mackenzie Hammonds, Kaylee Hammonds, Heidi Thomas and Chloe Hammonds served as junior bridesmaids. Nieces of the bride and groom, Holly Thomas and Hayley Gibson, served as flower girls.

Cooper Gibson, brother of the groom, served as best man. Groomsmen included Matthew Thomas, Jason Hammonds, Gregory Hammonds, Timothy Harris, Jeremy Sweet, Doug Marmaro, Isaiah Molinar, Joel Ruzicka, and David Harris. Junior groomsmen included Jacob Hammonds and Barrett Thomas. The groom’s nephew, Cason Gibson, served as ring bearer.

Floral and Décor: The bride carried a bouquet of white hydrangeas, white roses, white stock, freesia, white mini calla lilies, and white phalaenopsis orchid blooms, which complemented the flowers at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

Top Wedding Moments: The bride’s father tried to keep the moment light, knowing his daughter was nervous as he walked her down the aisle. He kissed her on the cheek as he gave her away and told her that he loved her. Seeing her groom for the first time eased her nerves. “I got excited knowing what this moment really meant,” she says. The couple exchanged traditional vows and a sweet first kiss, and the guests clapped and cheered as the gorgeous bride and handsome groom walked back down the aisle as husband and wife.

The Reception

The River Oaks Country Club reception was glitzy, fun and full of white orchids. Entertainment was provided by the Richard Brown String Quartet of Houston, the Royal Dukes Band of Houston, and DJ Wyatt Magnum of Los Angeles. Tables and lounge seating made it feel more like a fun party rather than a traditional wedding reception.

Floral and Décor: Centerpieces consisted of solid crystal stands that were overflowing with hundreds of white dendrobium orchids, white Hawaiian orchids and white phalaeneopsis orchids. Surrounding those centerpieces were crystal candlesticks and crystal votive candles. Other tables had 4-foot crystal chandeliers suspended from the ceiling directly over the guests’ tables as a centerpiece. Those tables were enhanced with low and lush florals of white hydrangea, white stock, white dendrobium and white phalaeneopsis orchids. Mirrored tables 14 feet long featured orchid runners down the ends of the tables while additional hedges of orchids were placed on crystal stands above those tables. A 12-foot floral halo of orchids hung directly over the center of the room and was a dramatic statement. The mirrored tables and mirrored bars reflected the orchids and candles in the room to provide an elegant glow. Sequin tablecloths added an additional shimmer to the space. The furniture consisted of rich silver and white velvet textures.

A special table was filled with wedding photos of the couple’s parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, all framed in silver matching the reception decor. Guests were treated to a S’mores Bar, Chick-Fil-A takeaway favors, and “The Gibby” — a Moscow Mule specialty drink served in a copper mug. Silhouettes of all the guests were cut by an artist, and a copy of each was later added to the couple’s wedding book as a one-of-a-kind memento. Guests also enjoyed a Cigar Roller outside.

The Cakes: The bride’s five-tiered buttercream cake was iced in white and silver, with white orchid gum paste flowers flowing down the side. The groom’s chocolate cake was iced in chocolate and featured a basketball court base with logos from Texas State University and the University of Houston. It was also decorated with a mountain, mountain bike and the Eagle Scout logo.

Top Reception Moments: The newlyweds enjoyed a private dinner before the reception. Their first dance was to “Forever” by Ben Harper. Father and daughter danced to “Turn Around” by Kenny Loggins. The groom and his mother danced to “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts. Everyone enjoyed dancing on the checkered dance floor and celebrating with glow sticks, necklaces, glasses and bling rings. Many of the guests performed “Beat It” by Michael Jackson.

The Exit: Guests tossed rose petals as the couple exited, and fire bursts filled the sky as Mr. and Mrs. Gibson drove away in a vintage Rolls Royce.

The Honeymoon: The couple stayed seven days at the Hyatt Zilara in Montego Bay, Jamaica and enjoyed outdoor activities including zip lining, riding horses in the ocean and a catamaran cruise before returning to their home and careers
in Houston.
