C elebrating Soul Cypress hosted its sixth annual Fashion with Passion Event at the Enchanted Cypress Ballroom on Nov. 3. Students from the Class of 2017 from Cy Fair High School, Cy Woods High School and Cypress Christian School served as the fashion models. They began their fundraising journey eight months prior to the event by participating in the Cypress Challenge, #17DaysofKindness. The challenge required each model to commit to one act of kindness per day — such as changing a flat tire or preparing snack bags for the homeless — in order to raise awareness for the programs of Celebrating Soul Cypress.

This year, the Fashion with Passion event raised almost $60,000. The funds benefit individuals and families who have experienced financial setbacks due to traumatic experiences. The event’s proceeds also go toward the Travis Chaffin Memorial Scholarship Fund for youth who demonstrate a strong character and heart for philanthropy.

Over 300 community members participate annually in this event, where the Jordan Merecka Caring Heart Award is presented. The award recognizes the individuals who have experienced a traumatic situation and turned it into something positive, providing inspiration to their fellow community members. The recipients of this year’s Jordan Merecka Caring Heart Award were Clyde and Melinda Gordon of Abby’s Gift.

Several local Cypress boutiques also were in attendance, including Anything Bling in Vintage, Muzzies, Al’s Formalwear, Damsels & Blokes Salon, Chelsea B Cosmetics, and Dillard’s Men’s Department.

The 2017 Fashion with Passion event will be held in November.

The mission of Celebrating Soul Cypress, which will soon be rebranded to “Deep Cypress Alliance,” is to bring the community together through the people, the place and the culture. Participants love the unique community and believe it will continue to flourish as they embrace the individual needs of its members, creating an atmosphere of harmony, quality of life and philanthropy. Celebrating Soul houses two primary programs to help accomplish its mission: The Jordan Merecka Caring Heart and The Travis Chaffin Memorial Scholarship.
